Sarasota: Gulf beaches and an unusual amount of culture

White quartz sand, a serious arts scene inherited from the Ringlings, and a calmer pace than the Atlantic coast.

Who this is for

For those who want the Gulf, culture and a slower rhythm than Miami

Sarasota sits on the Gulf side, about an hour south of Tampa. Siesta Key's sand is nearly pure quartz — it stays cool underfoot even in August, which is why it keeps winning beach rankings. The city inherited an outsized cultural life from circus magnate John Ringling: a museum, an opera, a ballet and a theatre scene that a city this size would not normally support.
