Pensacola is as far west as Florida goes — closer to New Orleans than to Miami, on Central time rather than Eastern. The sand here is ground quartz washed down from the Appalachians, which is why it is startlingly white and squeaks underfoot. The navy has been here since 1825 and still shapes the town. The Gulf is warm, the season is summer rather than winter, and the market runs on entirely different rhythms from South Florida.
